How to read the magnetic environment
The magnetosphere is a dynamic region shaped by Earth’s field and the solar wind. PlanetVexa combines current upstream measurements with explanatory geometry; it does not claim to measure the live position of each boundary.
Supersonic solar wind is slowed and heated upstream of Earth. Its illustrated position is schematic rather than a real-time boundary solution.
The outer boundary of Earth-dominated magnetic space is compressed on the dayside as solar-wind pressure changes.
On the nightside, the solar wind stretches the field far beyond Earth. The displayed tail is deliberately compressed for inspection.
The north–south component of the interplanetary magnetic field helps describe coupling conditions, but one value alone does not determine impacts.
Interpretation limit: field lines, bow shock, magnetopause, scale and motion are schematic and not to scale. Solar-wind speed, IMF Bz, Kp, source time and status come from the connected NOAA SWPC records.
